Review: Sid Meier's Memoir!: A Life in Computer Games, by Sid Meier
This is a great walk back through video game development time. As someone who works in the industry today, I marvel at the entire productions that could be made by one person back in the 80s. And how many games he could make in such a short time!
It’s fun to have a closer look at what makes Sid Meier tick, since I’m such a big fan of Civilization. I didn’t expect him to be a DRM apologist, but I get the impression Sid’s changed understanding of mods brought him a ways to understanding that he didn’t have it quite right in that area.
The story of how Firaxis came to own the titles that they are now so known for is also an interesting one. In the early parts of the book I certainly wondered how we could possibly end up in the world we have today, IP ownership wise for Civilization, but I’m glad it worked out for them the way it did.
It’s also great to get a couple of game design nuggets from someone who so clearly understands how the field works so deeply!
