Review: Ship of Magic, by Robin Hobb

This is a fantastic book. The characters jump off the pages as real people, and the whole book drags you through, not letting you put it down.

I read the Farseer trilogy about 12 years ago, and am very glad to be back in Robin Hobb’s world for the next trilogy so long later. (And with so many other series to read for the first time afterwards!)

In this book, I could understand every character, even the twisted and evil ones. They all made sense, and even some of the most despicable thought of themselves as heroes.

There are few characters I have hated quite as much as Kyle Haven, in the best of ways. He is a terrible person, but a great character.

I’m very impressed with Kennit’s conniving and how he twists it into seeming to do good, while meaning ill. It’s a subtle distinction I often want to see in deceptive characters that doesn’t often actually turn up.

I love Wintrow - he makes so much sense and yet is so chronically misunderstood.

Strong recommend for this one, and I’ll definitely read the next one.
